Synergia Medical's optoelectronic neurostimulation platform published in Scientific Reports

Scientific Reports, a Nature Portfolio journal, has published a paper describing Synergia Medical's implantable neurostimulation platform.

In this design, the wires that normally carry electrical current from the neurostimulator to the electrodes are replaced by optical fibres, and photovoltaic cells at the tip of the fibres convert laser light into electrical impulses. The platform was first adapted to a vagus nerve stimulator for the treatment of epilepsy.

According to the paper, the device complies with the ISO/TS 10974 standard for 1.5 T and 3 T MRI scanners.
